What is national equal pay day? The equal pay day is all about equality between men and women. It represents that both genders in the same workspace are being paid equally for the equal work.
Who started equal pay day? Originally, this event comes from the National Committee Pay Equity (NCPE) established in 1996. This was to gain awareness of the unfairness between women and men. However, if you dig even deeper, you will find out that this battle for equality already started in 1963. On 1963 the 10th of June, the equal pay act was created as new law by John F. Kennedy. To ensure all genders were equally paid. Unfortunately, this law didn't succeed because of inadequate remedies, loopholes, and adverse court rulings which weakened this rule massively.
How has pay equity changed since the equal pay act was signed in 1996? It mostly helped narrow the gender wage gap. However, women are still paid less but luckily this day helps to close this gap a little bit more each year.
The ratio of women's to men's average pay started to rise massively and reached about 70% in 1990. Luckily this special occasion has helped to lower this. In the United States, it is even forbidden to pay unequally. It is the law and employers need to follow these rules. This does not only conclude the actual salary but all the contractual terms. For example, 42 states have equal pay laws but all 49 states embrace equal payday. Latin America has its own Latina equal pay day. In the EU the difference in percentage is lowered to 13% on average. Many businesses take this seriously so come and tab in!
