It starts with the origin tale of the Jade Emperor (You Di) who got very angry with a town for killing his goose. He had planned to destroy the whole town with fire. But a fairy warned the people of the town. The fairy told them to light lanterns through the whole town during the day of the destruction. The emperor was fooled into thinking the town was already on fire. The whole area was saved and out of gratitude, the people made it an annual event by lightning colorful lanterns every year.

How is the Lantern Festival celebrated?
The festival does not only include lighting up lanterns. It also concludes with lion and dragon dances, parades, and fireworks. It is one big party! They eat small rice balls with fruits and nuts in them. These rice balls symbolize wholeness and unity.
Mostly this event is celebrated in China and other Asian countries. However, that does not mean that other countries picked up on this beautiful festival.
