Everything you need to know about A4 Paper Size
- It is the most popular and widely used format worldwide. It is the standard for printing legal documents and is frequently used in copy shops. It is the common choice for notebooks and notepads.
- It is part of the ISO 216 standard, based on the golden ratio: the square root of 2 defines the ratio of width to length.
- The aspect ratio of an A4 paper layout is approximately 1:1.4142.
- A4 is twice the size of A5 and half the size of A3. It can be doubled in half while maintaining the same ratio.
- It was adopted to simplify the international exchange of documents and is compatible with metric systems and imperial standards.
It is used in manuscripts and originals for publishers. On pages of this size, the world's best writers have written their best novels, either on typewriters or by hand. Its global prevalence has contributed to the efficiency of written communication.

Differences between A4 and DL Paper Sizes
In the United States, the most commonly used and standard paper format is known as "Letter" or "Letter". This format is slightly shorter and wider than an A4 design template.
The dimensions of the Letter are 8.5 x 11 inches (approximately 21.59 x 27.94 centimeters). It is important to take this size difference into account when printing documents, as there may be slight variations that affect the layout and presentation if they are documents originally designed for A4 format.
A4 page dimensions in different units of measurement
- A4 size in cm: in centimeters, an A4 size sheet measures 21 x 29.7 cm, equivalent to 210 x 297 mm.
- A4 size in inches: A4 paper measures approximately 8.27 x 11.67 inches.
- A4 size in pixels: an A4-size image with a resolution of 300 dpi is represented by 2480 x 3508 pixels.

History of the A4 Page Size
The A4 format was not invented by a single person but was developed through collaborative efforts in international paper standardization.
It has its roots in the work of German scientist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, who in 1786, described the relationship between the width and length of A4 formats. Lichtenberg was a professor of experimental physics at the University of Göttingen, where he conducted research in fields such as electricity and experimental physics.
Later in 1922, German engineer Dr. Walter Portsmann with the German Institute for Standardization (Deutsches Institut für Normung, DIN) developed DIN 476, which defined standardized paper sizes based on the aspect ratio √2 (square root of 2). It ensured that folding the paper in half would maintain the same ratio, making it easier to create proportional sizes.
Finally, in 1975, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) adopted ISO 216 to facilitate global document exchange and provide a consistent system of paper sizes.
